Why you can write personalized emails faster, (and why you aren’t)
People-First Personalization: The Future of Personalized Emails
Hey {{person.reading.this.blog}},
Doesn’t feel very good does it? That’s the level of personalization most prospects are used to. While it beats the spammy emails that have flooded our inboxes since, well, forever, it’s not that far off from them. Even with a {{Company}} thrown in there, most outbound email is using an outdated model of what people in the 2000’s envisioned modern personalized email would be.
Don’t get me wrong, this was a huge leap over what was previously available at the time, but what about those of us that want to stand out in the 2020’s and beyond? Surely there’s more to personalizing emails than {{First.Name}} and {{Company}}.
What went wrong?
We’ve allowed our sales tools to shape us. We’ve lost touch with delivering what our prospects want and we’ve failed to put ourselves in their shoes. Don’t worry, you aren’t to blame, we’ve all been guilty of it. Sales in some respects is a numbers game, but only because the proper tools haven’t been built yet to deliver both efficiency and volume.
People-First Personalization
Modern day successful founders, marketers, and SDRs don’t work with generic personalization from their CRM.
The companies who stand out are focusing on
“People-First Personalization”.
People-First Personalization focuses on the prospect as an individual, not as a row in a CRM. Effective SDRs today are diving in and searching for real points of connection and personal interest on the leads they’re reaching out to. While the core of the email might be scripted or pre-written, great SDRs hook prospects with an improvised personalized snippet above the core script that reminds prospects that there’s a real person on the other side of the screen.
Prospects are people and today people need more depth, more connection, and more personalization. Your lead loves soccer and you’re selling homes? Talk about the backyard they could play soccer in. Your lead loves the New England Patriots and you’re selling engineering analytics software? Relate Bill Bellichik’s intense use of data to propel the Patriots to 5 Super Bowl championships and how their team will be building their own superstars. These are the things effective SDRs do to generate high response rates and advance leads down the pipeline.
Saying “Hey {First.Name}}” is the same as holding up a giant neon sign that says “DELETE ME”.
Spoiler alert, your emails aren’t standing out from the 100’s of other emails they receive. Many SDRs say “Personalization takes time and effort and typing up emails is a pain, how do you expect me to do that?”. They’re right, personalization CAN take a lot of time. It’s even more frustrating because there are almost no software tools that help SDRs write personalized emails more effectively.
The Prospecting Rabbit Hole
Every SDR can relate to spending hours trying to find one thing that they could connect with their prospect on. Going from Google, to Linkedin, to some random podcast they had been interviewed on and searching everywhere.
After spending hours researching and crafting a great personalized snippet, you come to find out that a co-worker already had knowledge in that area and had a better email written up two weeks ago. Multiple hours spent, when all it could have been was a quick 10 minute conversation to send an awesome personalized email.
Researching takes a toll, writing the right email on something I don’t know, takes a toll. How could you expect me to write more personalized emails? Please just give me {{First.Name}} and let me be done with it! Many companies settle for {{First.Name}} and take their chances. They accept their 20% open rates and 1% reply rates if they’re lucky, but there is a better way.
Instead of writing {{First.Name}}, how would your sales process be different if you found a lead who was interested in data management and all you had to do was type {{Data Management}} and a personalized email from your team showed up?
